The Dragon Clans

There are five species of Dragons:  Great Dragons, Fire Dragons, Stone Dragons, Sea Dragons and Snow Dragons.  Dragons live in communities called Clans, with other dragons of the same species.  Each Clan has an elected Clan Chief.  The dragon’s governing body is called the Dragon Council, which consists of two dragons from each species.  The Dragon Council meets infrequently, and only when there is an issue that affects all dragons.

Male dragons are generally larger in size than their female counterparts.  While mating between dragon species is possible, it is not a common practice.  In ages past, because of the scarcity of prey, the dragons made a pact that the Fire and Stone Dragons would only live in the territory west of the Amber River, the Great Dragons, (who being the largest of the breed, needed the most food), resided in the land east of the river.  Snow Dragons live exclusively in the snow-covered, northern area called The Snow Fields.  Sea Dragons live along the coast of the seas or near lakes and rivers.

All dragons can speak and understand the speech of humans, and can perform some magic spells. However, different Clans know different spells.  A dragon’s ability to perform magic is limited by the four “Safeguards of Magic,” meaning that they must know what a spell will do, be able to recite the incantation, be able to perform the required gesture, and have enough power to conjure the spall.  There are some spells that dragons are unable to conjure because they cannot perform the gesture required.

Dragons have evolved as the access to prey has diminished, becoming smaller in size (in both human and dragon form) than they were in ages past.  Dragons are generally nocturnal, since most of their prey is similarly active only at night.  Only the Sea Dragons are frequently active during the day.  This has helped the dragons avoid notice by the humans.  In human form, dragons cannot grow facial hair.  Until recently, humans considered dragons to be mythical.
